Begin with the ordinary parts of the trip

Breakfast, wet coats, naps and where everyone sleeps shape a holiday as much as the big outing. Start with Portland or Freeport, choose a workable room and build a few manageable days around it.

Two bases, different kinds of days

Choose Portland for a city plan with a working waterfront and art. Choose Freeport for town days around L.L.Bean and nearby outdoor destinations, with a Portland museum visit as a separate outing.

Make the room work after bedtime

Decide whether you need a kitchen, separate sleeping space or connecting rooms before choosing a rate. A room that lets one person rest while others stay awake can matter more than another amenity.
